Bubble wrap painting

Our days have been a whirlwind lately and to top it off D just got his drivers permit!!! EEEK!!!! Considering all though we still have found time for our "peaceful playing" just no time to blog about it :0)
So here is one of our projects we did last week. It is called "Bubuz peent" according to one of my wee ones (so cute). It's very easy and fun! All you need is:
Paint
Bubble wrap
Paint brush
Paper
and here is how you do it!

I taped the bubble wrap to the table (for my carpets safety)...

Paint the bubble wrap...

And then press the paper on the bubble wrap and remove! Ta Da!!!

Discovery Basket

Our discovery basket

I came across a great blog a couple weeks ago and since can't find it anywhere in the cyber world (go figure). The blog had an amazing basket set up with all sorts of things for little ones to discover. I loved it so much I put one together for my little darlings!
Our discovery basket contains:

As you can see I have filled it with many different materials with a multitude of textures, colors, uses, weight... and so on and so on.

  I plan to change out the baskets contents every week to keep it new and exciting!

Volcanic color changing eruption!

We started with red lava...

Yesterday we had discovered what happens when you mix vinegar, baking soda, and food coloring! Wow!!! What fun! They sat and stared in amazement the whole time! Need I mention we repeated this process about 5 time!?!?

and then we added blue...

and it made purple!!!

Toddler color collage packets

Here is a fun and easy way to let your toddlers make a collage. We have been making one of these a week focusing on a different color each time. I think the best part is searching the house for a specific color of materials we can use in them :0)

To get started you will need:

Clear contact paper

Collage materials (we used all one color)

and of course scissors.
Cut off two pieces of contact paper making sure they are the same size (one for top one for bottom). And here's the fun part, search the house high and low for the collage materials! It was a lot of fun taking my little guys around looking for specific colors of objects :) Lay the bottom piece of contact paper on a flat surface along with the collage goodies and let them go at it. I love watching them sticking their hands on and pulling their hands off the the contact paper! It's so funny! When they are done just lay the second sheet over it and seal as best you can. I used tape all the way around the edges of our just to be sure it won't open up.

Our Indoor Play Area's

I thought I would give you all a tour of our indoor play area's. It is a work in progress and I am still in the process of weaving out our plastic toys. I plan to keep a couple such as the little people toys just because they are so loved by the daycare kids.

Our playstand that hubby and I built.

Car racer, playsilks, little people farm, tree blocks, bucket of little people toys.

Drop and roll ball toy, stacking toy, number bean bags, bead maze, misc. balls, bilibo, xylophone.

Sensory table hubby and I built, a box to play in, and blocks.

Unit blocks and cardboard blocks.

This is where my two's (and sometimes E who is 9) eat, play, do art, and learn.

Our nature basket right now holds a stick, rock, leaf, pine cone, dinosaur, and a sand dollar.

Our shelf (which I would love to replace) has a pound a ball, hideaway people, q-tip toy, ring stacker, rainbow stacker, books (that have been chewed on by my puppy) and a few puzzles.

Homemade gel like finger paint :0)

I'm not really sure what to call this stuff... but it's pretty, easy to make, and feels neat if you use it as a finger paint. It's a great sensory tool and also great for color recognition. I got this recipe years ago from a pre-k website that I don't think even exist today. But if I ever find it I'll put a link of it up as it was very resourceful and addicting!

So to make these paints you will need (things we all have in our kitchens already, yay)
1/2 cup of cornstarch
2 1/4 cups water
Food coloring
Small pot
Whisk
3 glass jars with lids

You start by mixing the cornstarch and water in a small pot with a whisk over medium heat. Stir continuously making sure to scrap the sides and bottom edges of the pot frequently. The mixture will start to thicken and turn to a gel consistency. At that point remove the pot from the heat and let cool for a couple minutes.

You can then spoon equal amounts of the gel into the jars. Add about 5-8 drops of the desired color into each jar and stir making sure to mix the colors well.

Tada!!! You have gel finger paint!!!

Here's the beautiful picture my dck's made. One of my dck's prefers not to get his hands messy so I offered paint scrapers and he was very pleased with that!

Tree Blocks

Does it sound funny that I am absolutely in love with some blocks? Well, I am! I have seen these tree blocks on several different toy sites and have been drooling over them. They were pretty spendy and I couldn't justify spending that much on some cut up branches. So then I was going to make some but hubby said I needed a chop saw and I don't have a one... yet. I kept searching and finally found these ones at Heirloom Wooden Toys for $26! And they even came in a really nice fabric bag to store them in. I was so excited when they finally came!

As you can tell...

They are loved by everyone...

even by the older kids.

These tree blocks have been well worth the money and I plan on ordering a second set in the near future!

Hide Away People

 

These hide away people have been a big hit with my DCK. They have been great for their fine motor skills, color recognition, and color matching. They were really very easy to make! I bought all the wooden pieces from a craft store and painted them with water colors. Then I sealed them with beeswax making them completely toxic free!

I didn't throw in the towel...

No, I didn't abandon my blog already... I have been blessed to have my mother in law come all the way across the country to come spend a couple weeks with us! Little did she know she came all that way to take care of my family and house... on the Friday before Easter I was struck down with the stomach flu. Ick! I don't know how I would have made it through without her. So anyway, Easter turned out great thank God! The kids had a great time even though D "thinks" he's getting a little too old for all of this. He doesn't know what he's talking about... or maybe I'm just in denial. Either way he will continue to be an active participant in our Easter traditions :0)

Textured Number Bags

I saw these awesome textured number bags here on Izzie, Mac and Me and just HAD to make them for my DCK! They were a lot of fun to make and they seem to be enjoying the uniqueness of each one (yay, with a huge grin). Each bag has a number and corresponding amount of ribbon tags.

Each bag has a different texture of fabric

and is filled with something different.

Here is what is in each bag:

pink: baby wipes wrapper 

red: plastic shopping bag

orange: polyfill beads

yellow: cotton balls

green: cotton and a squeaker

blue: navy beans

purple: cut up straws

brown: ribbed side of cardboard 

black: fabric shreds and bell

and I love how they look in their little basket :)

TaaaDaaa!!!

Dyeing playsilks with kool-aid

Playsilks! That wonderful open ended toy that can be wings to fly, a dolly blanket, a table cloth, fort walls, a cape for your little super hero, or just about anything! We absolutely LOVE ours :0)
So here is how I did it...

First get your plain playsilks. I bought mine at dharmatrading.com and got the 30" X 30". You will also need:
lots of vinegar
hot water
kool-aid 2 packs per color (at last... a use for this stuff)
glass bowel

1. Add one cup of vinegar and 4 cups of very hot water to a glass bowel. Put one playsilk in the bowel to soak while getting the dye ready.
2. In a measuring cup mix one cup of vinegar, two packs of kool-aid, and a cup of very hot water. Mix it up and pour in the glass bowel with the silk.
3. With gloved hands or a wooden spoon stir it up and swirl it around for about 5 minutes or until the silk has soaked up most the color. Be careful not to ball up the silk tightly as this will make your color very uneven.
4. Once the silk has soaked up most the color you are ready for the fun part... hahaha! Rinsing the excess color out! Under cold water rinse and wring the silk until the water runs clear. The red can take a really looooong time!
5. Hang up to dry.
6. Time to play with them!

Our sensory table

Right now in our sensory table we have colored rice with little Tonka trucks and the other side has large pom pom balls, a bucket, and a shovel. Since I have one child who is 12 months in my daycare one side of our sensory table always has things that he cannot choke on. 

Colored rice :0)

Okay, this rice was a BIG hit with the DCK (daycare kids). I put it in the sensory table along with some measuring spoons and cups and let them go at it! Of course it doesn't look as pretty now, hehehe! Here is how I made it:

big bag of white rice
6 zip lock bags
rubbing alcohol
food coloring

I put two cups of rice in each bag along with 1 tsp. of rubbing alcohol. Then add a generous amount of food coloring mixing colors if needed to get the right color. Seal the bag and shake, squish, and smoosh until all the color is distributed evenly. Then I baked the rice on a cookie sheet covered in foil at 200 for 15 minutes. The smell of the alcohol goes away once it is fully dried in the oven.
